The job interview is often the last step before a final decision. Yet even highly qualified candidates sabotage themselves with avoidable mistakes. Here are the 10 most common ones — and how not to make them.

The STAR method

For each answer: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Aim for 1–2 minutes per answer. Not too short, not too long.

The 10 mistakes to avoid

1
Arriving late (or too early)

Arriving 2–3 minutes early is ideal. Being late is an immediate red flag. Too early (more than 10 minutes) puts the recruiter in an awkward position. Always plan a buffer, and signal any unexpected delay as soon as possible.

2
Not researching the company

Being unfamiliar with the company's products, mission, or recent news signals that you're not genuinely interested. Minimum: read the website, recent press articles, and the interviewer's LinkedIn profile.

3
Speaking poorly of former employers

Even if your last employer was toxic, criticizing them hurts you directly. Always reframe positively: "I was looking for an environment where I could better contribute to…"

4
Saying "I don't know" without developing

It's fine not to have a perfect answer to a tough question. Show your reasoning: "I haven't faced that exact case, but with a similar situation, I would have…"

5
Talking too much or too little

30-second answers seem superficial. 5-minute monologues exhaust the recruiter. Use the STAR method and aim for 1–2 minutes per answer.

6
Not asking questions at the end

"No questions?" is often fatal. Prepare 3–4 genuine questions about the role, the team, the first 6 months' challenges, and company culture.

7
Lying about your skills

Technical recruiters verify. An exaggerated certification or overestimated language level gets discovered quickly. Better to say "I have solid foundations in X and learn fast."

8
Ignoring non-verbal language

A firm handshake, sustained eye contact, open posture: these signals matter as much as your words. Avoid crossed arms, averted gaze, or your phone on the table.

9
Not knowing your own CV

If the recruiter asks "tell me about this project" and you hesitate, it's catastrophic. Re-read your CV the day before and prepare an anecdote for each key experience.

10
Not following up after the interview

A brief, sincere thank-you email within 24 hours sets an attentive candidate apart. It's not a formality — it's an opportunity to reaffirm your motivation.
