Lettre de motivation : la méthode infaillible
Les recruteurs passent moins de 30 secondes sur une LDM. Voici comment capter leur attention dès la première ligne — et la structure qui convertit.
The cover letter remains one of the most underestimated documents in a job application. Many candidates rush it or copy-paste it from one offer to the next. Yet a well-written cover letter can make the difference between two equivalent profiles — it shows you understand the role and the company.
A cover letter isn't about you — it's about what you can bring to THEM. Reframe every sentence around the value you create.
1. An opening that hooks (not "I am writing to...")
The most common mistake: starting with a generic formula like "I am writing to express my interest in…". The recruiter has already checked out. Your first sentence should show you know the company and have something concrete to offer.
- Targeted hook: "Your launch of [product X] convinced me that my growth marketing expertise would be a direct asset to your team."
- Results hook: "In 18 months, I increased the conversion rate by 34% at [company]. I want to replicate that kind of result for you."
- Avoid: "Following your advertisement on…", "I am writing to express…", "Having seen your job posting…"
2. The body: the 3-paragraph structure
Show you've done your research. Mention a recent project, a value that resonates with you, a challenge the company faces. Be specific — never generic.
Connect the responsibilities listed in the offer to your concrete skills. Use quantified examples from past achievements that match directly.
What sets you apart from other candidates: a rare skill, dual expertise, unique field experience. This is your decisive argument.
3. A closing that drives action
Never end passively. Your closing should make the recruiter want to pick up the phone. Suggest a concrete exchange: "I would love to discuss how I could contribute to [specific goal] in a 15-minute call." It's direct, professional, and facilitates next steps.
Ending with "Looking forward to hearing from you" is too passive. Suggest a concrete action.
4. What you should never include
- Repeating your CV — the cover letter complements your CV, it doesn't summarize it. Add context and motivation, not a recap.
- Clichéd phrases — "dynamic and motivated", "proactive", "strong adaptability" say nothing concrete.
- Spelling mistakes — a single typo can eliminate your application. Proofread, have someone else read it, use a spell checker.
- Excessive length — one page maximum, ideally 250 to 350 words. The recruiter only has 30 seconds.
- Lies or exaggerations — everything you write can be verified in an interview. Stay factual.
